When you talk about job prospects with PhD students these days the conversation usually centers on the dearth of tenure track professor openings and the over-abundance of qualified PhDs for each opening. But this past December's Paris climate deal means nations who signed the agreement need to develop (or continue to improve) greenhouse gas inventories... The IPCC, USDA, and EPA have their own inventory methods. Inventories will be especially challenging for developing countries to measure and report. A major goal for my own research is for it to help improve the CO2 emissions estimated from liming and irrigation on farms. You can read more about the importance of carbon measurements to the Paris deal in this article from Nature News.
